 “The internet has given audiences much more power than ever before.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?

It is true that the audience is rising in power however major media and tech companies still have a lot of power. In my opinion audience has power to a small extent since the companies still have a majority of the power .Also some may say the audience having power is a advantage for the companies.

Some changes have happened to the music industry for example the amount of radio listener are decreasing as many listen to online streaming apps like Spotify. A advantage of this is the music is on demand but before Spotify you had to wait for the song to be put on the radio or buy a cd.Some may say this is a disadvantage as the artists don’t get paid much for people streaming music on spotify as  they pay $0.00331 per stream.A disadvantage is since the music is on demand the quality of the sound file may go down.In addition people may illegally download the music.

On the other hand people get free content so it is a advantage.In additon there is a variety of music choices.Also it is easier to become famous as on these websites it is free to promote youre songs and put them on the playlist.In addition before record labels had to make someone famous but now its the audiences choice.This is  because the more a song gets streamed the more a song is recommended to you.This is an advantage of streaming apps like spotify ,soundcloud and youtube music.In addition you dont have to buy a cd or  wait on the radio.

Also Film and Television has had some disadvantages for example movies dont earn as much money because people pay  for a netflix membership to watch movies.A main difference is online streaming this means companies dont get paid as much as people dont usually buy DVDs anymore.It is bad as Children can casually watch a 18 rated movie.Also there are illegal streaming sites such as 123 movies who stream uinreleased or in cinema movies.This means the movie makers do not make as much money.Also Netflix rivals many shows as they make their own programs now such as cobra kai.This is bad for other shows as it is a top competitor against there show.

On the other hand there are some advantages for example you can watch a variety of films on demand.Also even though the films are streamed they are still high quality as they are 1080p.In addition it is a multiplatform software as it is available on computers phones tablets and TVs.This means it can be watched on the go.In addition you can binge watch a series this is good as you can take youre time.In addition the audience has power because if you rate a film high or it is watched alot it pops up on the trending section this is good as you dont have to spread word through mouth that a seroes/film is good.

Finally Newspaper Industry has changed alot there has been a lot of disadvantages for example many read the news online so Newspapers are losing money for example in 2010 30 million Newspapers were bought weekly but in 2017 only 12 million are bought weekly.This is a massive decrease.Also there a lot of fake news rumours spreaded throughout the internet for example the 2020 election being rigged.

On the other hand advantages of this is that anyone can be a journalist for example someone recorded the George Floyd incident however was not a qualified journalist.This is proof if you record something and post it online it can get spread on the news very quickly.Also the audience can comment on a article to interact with the companies.

To conclude I believe that the audience have gained power but the companies still have a lot more power than the audience.The interntet makes the audience powerful as if they post something online it can quickly get spreaded to a news article and they can change lives
