Reception Theory

(1)The meaning the producers want as the message is the preferred reading.

(2)opposition reading goes against the meaning the makers are trying to make for example McDonalds want you to think there food is nice but an oppositional reading is it is unhealthy.

(3) The preferred reading is teenagers on council estates are bad people.

(4)Teenagers will have a oppositional reading as they will feel insulted that they have been portrayed this way.

A preferred reading of the Big Mac is that it is huge and tasty. Also McDonalds intentionally left the lettuce stuck on the outside of the burger to communicate with the audience and try to say the Burger is healthy. The connotation that the Big Mac is healthy is that they talk about fresh crunchy lettuce and pickles. In addition they want the reader to think the Big mac is very filling. Also they want to persuade you to buy the big mac by saying ‘Bring us your bigger than average appetite’. Also they are trying to say it is cheap as you pay for a burger and they say it is a whole meal. In addition they talk about having 100 percent beef patty’s this will attract meat eaters.

On the other hand a oppositional reading is a Vegetarian may find the Big Mac disgusting as it is 100% Beef. In addition people will say it is unhealthy as there is two patty’s and cheese. Also readers may talk about how in the advert it looks nicer than it ever is in real life. Also people may say it is very expensive as you can get a home cooked meal  for  a lot cheaper. In addition people may  say it is not filling as in real life it is always squashed and smaller than the burger on the adverts. Fat people may feel offended as it says bring us your bigger than average appetite .

In the middle the Negotiated readers may believe that the big mac is unhealthy but it is very tasty. In addition they might agree about it being expensive however they may think the taste is worth the price. In addition they may understand the burger is not as nice as it looks in the picture they will still want to buy it.

A preffered reading of the burger king advert is that it is good value and very cheap. Also they intentionally put the size of the fries to make the reader think about the big portion for a small price. Also the way they say only 99p makes the reader think it is very cheap.

On the other hand a oppositional reading is the fries on the advert are never that big of a portion size as they are in real life. Also some may say you could cook these stuff at home for cheaper. In addition some viewers may say the taste is not nice as it is on the cheaper menu.

In the middle negotiaded readers may believe that the menu do not have a nice taste but they are cheap. In addition they may buy it because it is good value. Also they may understand it is not as nice as it is in the picture but they may still buy it.
